From beach picnics to brunch, here are ways to celebrate Mom

By Jane Bartnett

It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful place to spend Mother’s Day than Siesta Key.

If you’re celebrating a special woman — whether you call her Mother, Mom or Mama — here are a few ideas to make the day even more memorable.

Beach Picnic at Siesta or Turtle Beach

Beach-loving moms may enjoy a picnic and relaxing afternoon at Siesta Beach or Turtle Beach. Skip the stress of cooking and let local markets handle the meal.

Morton’s Market in Siesta Key Village and Crescent Beach Market near the south bridge offer prepared meals perfect for the beach. Stop in or call ahead to arrange everything from sandwiches to full spreads — and don’t forget dessert. Crescent Beach Market also specializes in gluten-free options.

For a memorable touch, plan a sunset picnic. Both markets can prepare dinner or charcuterie boards for an evening by the water.

Indoor Dining Options

For a more formal celebration, Summer House offers Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant features an extensive spread of pastries, seafood and sushi in an upscale setting. Reservations are recommended.

Cafe Gabbiano, in Siesta Key Village, offers a special four-course Mother’s Day dinner paired with wines from Amaterra Winery in Portland, Oregon. Wine pairings and gratuity are included in the ticket price.

For a more casual option, Turtles Restaurant on Little Sarasota Bay offers indoor and outdoor dining with waterfront views. The Mother’s Day menu includes seafood, steak and options for children.

Special Gifts for Mom

Jewelry remains a timeless gift. Created Gems, located on Ocean Boulevard, features pieces made with its trademarked Spektralyte diamonds.

At the south end of the island, Silver City offers locally crafted Siesta Key Gemstone and Wave pendants featuring sand from Siesta Beach.

For a hands-on option, children ages 5 to 18 can create floral arrangements at the Gulf Gate Library from 3 to 4 p.m. May 9 with members of the Sarasota Garden Club. Registration is required by May 1.
