ADA swings the focus of fundraiser

A Siesta Beach lifeguard is raising money to have five ADA swings installed at Sarasota County playgrounds.

Robert Martini is promoting his efforts on his Facebook page, and is planning to participate in a grueling 50K run on Sept. 4 that begins on Longboat Key and ends in Venice. People can donate by visiting his page.

Here’s part of what Martini wrote in support of his cause:

“Remember running around the playground when you were a kid? Maybe hanging from the monkey bars or seeing who could swing the highest?

“It wasn’t just a mindless energy burn. Many have called play the work of childhood. Play teaches children how to make friends, make rules, and navigate relationships.

“But for kids whose disabilities keep them from using playgrounds, those opportunities can be lost.” Martini is calling his fundraiser the Maverick Movement, in tribute to his son, Maverick. The youngster has some sensory issues and will be of many who benefit from the ADA swings, his father reports.
