Turtle Beach Pub: best prices on Siesta Key?
By Paul Roat

Restaurant dining tip: Good conversation starter is to mention the best burger you’ve ever had.

Siesta Key residents and visitors could and should add Turtle Beach Pub Beach Bar and Grill in the chat.

The south Key restaurant across the road from Turtle Beach could well have some of the best burger deals — and best food deals — around.

For $5.99 you can get the popular cheeseburger combo. It’s a third-pound of Black Angus beef with either bacon and cheddar or mushrooms and Swiss cheese, served with the also popular Pub Fries.

Start with the Buffalo Wings, though. Back-of-house manager Abel Ortega recommends them in any variety: mild, hot, extra hot, barbecue or Oriental. Wings are $5.99 for five, $10.99 for 10.

Other starting highlights at $4.99 are the Crab Poppers with Ranch Dip and the Fish Bites.

Front-of-house manager Amber Davis recommends the popular Philly Steak Sandwich with pepper, onion and melted cheese for $9.99. She also likes the Mahi-Mahi Fillet either grilled, fried or served Cajun style at the same price.

Remember that Turtles Pub is across the beach from Turtle Beach? Also remember its Beach Baskets To Go for $8. Stop in for a chicken, tuna, crab salad or turkey sandwich with chips and a soda and you’re set for the sand.

After the sand come back for what has to be one of the best happy hour deals on the key. Turtle Beach Pub from 3 to 6 p.m. has nine $3 appetizers, including peel-and-eat shrimp, chicken wings, pizza, and more.

Drink prices are also reduced through 7 p.m. from its full bar.

Then come back to the pub later in the day for more good grub. Hit the Grilled Fish of the Day, which is generally an Asian catfish called swai. Hey, grouper is pretty much non-existent these days in these parts, and swai is just about as good and, at $8.99 either fried or Cajun cooked with Pub Fries, cole slaw, and Texas toast as a platter, it’s yet another great deal.

Turtles Pub is child friendly. The “Kid’s Stuff” menu for $5.99 for youths under the age of 12 includes a choice of burger, hot dog, grilled cheese sandwich, chicken fingers, fish and chips, or pizza, all served with fries or apple sauce plus a soda.

Owners Frank Ailehner and Tom Tuso bought the establishment at 8865 Midnight Pass Road, (phone 941-349-2280) in 2003. It is in front of the Turtle Beach Marina that offers boaters free dockage for a beverage and sandwich.

Don’t have your own vessel? Rent anything from a pontoon to a kayak, flats skiff to a paddle board for an afternoon or a day from the marina.

As manager Davis put it, “Turtle Beach Pub has a full bar, great wings, an excellent happy hour with good drinks and appetizers and is family friendly.”
