Part of Silver City’s beach-themed jewelry collection supports Mote Marine research

By Jane Bartnett

“Who doesn’t cherish the beauty of our gulf waters?” says Monica Galfre, owner of Silver City Sarasota jewelry in Southbridge Mall.
When the devastating red tide bloom came ashore in 2018, Galfre wanted to find a way to support Mote Marine Laboratory’s research efforts and increase awareness.
“Silver City is only blocks away from the beach and we were very aware of this terrible event. Red tide impacted everyone on Siesta Key,” she said. “I got my team together and we designed the first item in our Tide Away collection. In 2019, we began selling our Tide Away stainless-steel keychain and donating 25% from the sale of each item” to Mote.
“I’m proud to report that in the five years that we’ve been selling our Tide Away collection that has grown to include a total of nine popular items, Silver City has donated over $9,000 to Mote,” Galfre added.

The success of the original Tide Away keychain that depicts a frolicking dolphin, manatee, and sea turtle in the water led Galfre decided to design more items and create a full line. She soon trademarked “Tide Away Save Our Beaches.” The collection now includes two different bracelets, earrings, a Tide Away pendant, a blue-green bead, a gift set, and a blue-green wave pendant that reads “Save our Beaches.”
All are made from stainless steel. A colorful tote bag with “Tide Away, Save Our Beaches” inscribed upon it completes the collection.
Tide Away items begin at $20 for the keychain. The gift set retails for $99. All nine items are sold exclusively at Silver City.
The white sand and blue-green waters of Siesta Key have also inspired Galfre to create two other Silver City exclusive designs:
The White Sand Siesta Key Jewelry Collection features pendants, rings, earrings, and bracelets that contain the white sand of Siesta Key, accented with abalone shell in an epoxy enamel. Each unique design is created by Silver City’s own silversmith and no two are alike. Prices for the White Sand Siesta Key Jewelry Collection begin at $49.99.
The trademarked Watercolor Gemstone collection may be Silver City’s most iconic and well-known treasure. Made from Siesta Key’s white quartz sand infused with blue-green quartz, the gemstone designs are set in either sterling silver or 14K white or yellow gold. There are close to 200 designs in bracelets, earrings, pendants, and rings that begin at $89. Watercolor Gemstone jewelry set in 14K gold begins at $199.
The sun pendant, according to Galfre, is the most popular item in the line.
Capturing the unique and tropical beauty of Siesta Key has been Galfre’s driving force since she opened Silver City Sarasota in October 2005. Creating customized designs for clients is also a special interest. Preserving Siesta Key’s beaches and marine life, she believes, requires everyone’s support.
Silver City Sarasota is located at 6539 Midnight Pass Rd. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Sundays.
