How to break the grip of the rip

With the warm-up in weather, more people will be swimming off Siesta Key.

With that in mind, Sarasota County Emergency Services is reminding swimmers of the dangers of rip currents. They are powerful and dangerous currents of water flowing away from shore at beaches.

If caught in a rip current:

  1. Relax and don’t swim against the current.
  2. Swim parallel to shore until you no longer feel the pull of the current, or call out for help.

Whenever possible, swim near a lifeguard. Siesta Beach has for lifeguard stations along its shore.
