Sand Castles: Summer Cove on Siesta Key

Author: Share:
Built in 2007, Summer Cove has 45 spacious units, which rarely go up for sale.

Tucked behind lush foliage off of Midnight Pass Road, Summer Cove on Siesta is one of the best kept secrets on Siesta Key.

Built on the three-and-a half-acre bayside site of the longtime Siesta Key favorite Summerhouse Restaurant, the luxury condominium complex includes only 45 three-and four-bedroom residences, each of which has from 2,100 to 3,000 square-feet of living space.

Since the community was first built in 2007, units there have rarely been offered for sale. Only one is currently on the market, and the seller is being represented by Sheri and Bob Ruiz, of Key Solutions Real Estate. Sheri said that besides the small number of total units at Summer Cove, the reason they’re hardly ever for sale is that the community has so much to offer its residents.

“All of the units are on one floor, and they have spacious, open floor plans,” she said. “Plus, every resident has parking under the building, a storage unit and an elevator that opens to only two units. The last sale is here was 18 months ago.”

The particular residence that Key Solutions has for sale, #11, is a turnkey-furnished end unit and has three bedrooms, two and a half baths and 2,166 heated/cooled square-feet. When stepping from the elevator directly into the open living space, there is an abundance of natural light that pours in from three walls of windows. There’s also a gourmet kitchen that includes real wood cabinets, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a double oven and nine-foot ceilings.

Sheri said that the original owner of the unit, which is priced at $925,000, put the utmost care into its design.

“She installed all new 24-inch flooring, and it has a great look,” she said. “It’s just so light and bright.”

Summer Cove’s resort-style amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center.

People who are familiar with the Summerhouse Restaurant that used to reside on the property will be pleased to see that the Carl Abbott/Sarasota School of Architecture designed building where Siesta Key residents used to wine and dine is now the site of one of the largest and best equipped fitness rooms on the Island.

The landmark building has been converted into a beautiful clubhouse, with the state-of-the-art fitness center, meeting space, gathering rooms, game room, full kitchen and bar/TV lounge. On the bayside of the property is a resort-style pool and spa, which overlook the Intracoastal Waterway and Sarasota Bay beyond. There is also a kayak and canoe storage and launch, as well as boat docks, which are available to purchase on a first come-first served basis.

If your tastes run more towards sunning yourself on the beach, the Summer Cove community has its own beach access right across Midnight Pass Road.

Sue Dietrich has owned a Summer Cove condominium for almost eight years. She lives in upstate New York for part of the year, and Siesta Key during the cooler months.

She said that she had looked all over the state of Florida for a place to buy a second home, but until she came to Siesta Key, nothing felt “homey” enough. The Ruizes also sold Sue her Summer Cove unit.

“Bob and Sheri took us to three days of condominiums and when we saw this place, it was immediate,” Sue said. “We didn’t see anything else that compared, that was new construction at the time.

The Summer Cove community does allow two pets of up to 100 pounds per owner, and the units may be rented by the owners up to three times per year, but the rentals must be for a minimum of one month at a time.

Sue said that she loves the fact that there is gated security at Summer Cove, as well as the option to have a pet and the spectacular Intracoastal and Gulf of Mexico views. But the interaction with her friendly neighbors may just be her favorite part of owning a condominium in that community.

The Summer Cove pool lies alongside the Sarasota Bayfront, where there are also private boat docks for residents.

“We have pit parties, New Year’s Eve parties, Super Bowl parties, and more, so folks get to know each other,” she said. “It’s a nice social group of neighbors who look out for each other.  With boating together, swimming or exercising in our own gym, we have it all in paradise.”
