The following is a press release issued Jan. 6 by Save Siesta Key — the group fighting to bring a referendum on incorporation to island voters:
Dear Supporters:
The December straw vote to determine if we want the opportunity to vote on a referendum to incorporate and create our own town resulted in an overwhelming 87.1% YES, WE DO!
Turnout for the straw vote was 41.4%, well above recent county-wide elections on local issues. By comparison, turnout in March for local issues including the one-cent school board tax and single-member districts was 28.95%. Thank You Siesta Key Voters!! As per state laws, ballots returned after December 30th will continue to be tallied; but will not be added to the official count.
This tremendous turnout and favorable vote will go a long way toward convincing the members of our local delegation to vote yes to send this bill to Tallahassee.
That vote will occur on January 12th when the four members for the Sarasota County’s local delegation, Senator Joe Gruters, Representatives Fiona McFarland, Mike Grant, and James Buchanan convene.
You are encouraged to attend this meeting and wear a blue shirt to show support for the effort. PLEASE BE THERE TO SUPPORT ALL THE WORK THAT HAS GOTTEN US TO THIS VOTE!!!
January 12th from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
Administration Center
1660 Ringling Blvd. in Sarasota.
SEE YOU THERE!
Congratulations and Happy New Year,
Tim Hensey, Chairman
