Sea Bags sailed into Siesta Key’s Siesta Village Plaza about a year and a half ago. Based in Portland, Maine, the company has built a national reputation for handcrafted bags made from 100% recycled sailcloth.

The sails that once flew from sailboats now find new life as handbags, totes, shoulder bags, duffels, wine bags and travel accessories. Some designs even bring a nautical touch to homes and offices.

Stylish and durable, Sea Bags also carry a rich maritime history.

The company began on the Portland waterfront more than 20 years ago. One of its first creations was a sturdy tote bag crafted from an old sail for a Maine fisherman. Today, Sea Bags still operates from the same wharf where it began, continuing a tradition of reusing and repurposing maritime materials.

Sustainability remains central to the company’s mission. Through its Sail Trade program, Sea Bags reports that 8,000 to 10,000 sails have been reclaimed and recycled annually since 1999. According to the company, those sails would cover nearly 4 million square feet — roughly the size of 70 football fields.

Sea Bags encourages sailboat owners to donate or trade in used sails at the Siesta Key store. Once evaluated for material, size and condition, the sails are shipped to Maine, cleaned and transformed into new products.

The Vintage Collection: A Seafaring Story

Among the company’s many offerings, the Vintage Collection holds special appeal for sailors and lovers of nautical history.

The sail insignias featured on Vintage Collection bags come directly from the boat’s mainsail and are cut from what the company calls “the sweet spot of the sail.” The original markings — including numbers, letters and class insignias — remain visible on the finished bags.

“Each mark, stitch and weathered detail on our recycled sailcloth tells a story, making every Sea Bag completely one of a kind,” according to a company spokesperson.

Rust stains, stitching patterns and faded sail markings reveal clues about a sail’s age and history. Wire ropes commonly used from the 1950s through the 1980s often left rust marks, while zigzag stitching and thread colors once served as a sailmaker’s signature.

“Most insignias start as primary colors of blue, red and black,” the company website explains. “The more faded the color, the older the sail or the more time it has spent on the water.”

Traditional sails are typically white but may appear in shades of cream or tan. Some sailcloth remains crisp and firm, while older sails develop a softer, almost satiny texture over time.

Vintage Sea Bags are available as medium and large totes, duffels, weekenders, backpacks, handbags and crossbody bags.

Turtles, Dogs and Football

Along with the Vintage Collection, the Beach Collection features colorful sea turtles, waves and sea glass-inspired designs.

Dog lovers can find bags featuring paw prints, black labs, Bernese mountain dogs and golden retrievers. Sports fans are drawn to the NFL Collection, while the Cure Collection — featuring pink lupine flowers — benefits the Maine Cancer Foundation.

The company’s Chebeague Travel Duffel also is designed to meet airline carry-on requirements.

Sea Bags even sponsors an eight-member women’s sailing team recognized as one of the country’s top competitors in J/24 regattas.
