Sept. 19: burglary

Complainant owns a main house and guest house currently under renovation. He received a call from a neighbor who saw an unknown male on his property. Investigation revealed that the suspect entered the unlocked guest house where miscellaneous property is being stored during construction. The suspect made a bed in the garage area and utilized the air conditioning and restroom area. Examination of property and garbage left behind revealed clothing and a job application with name included.  Investigation is complete. Witness sightings provided a description of the suspect. Investigation is closed.

Sept. 21: forgery

A representative of a local church reported that counterfeit checks were distributed bearing the church’s name, address, and former bank account number. Complainant advised the checks were being used as part of a scam in which recipients were instructed to deposit the checks into their accounts then purchase gift cards in order to evaluate customer service. As the former bank account was closed and no funds were missing from the current account, the case was held inactive and the Internet Crimes Taskforce database was updated.

Sept. 25: theft

Victim reported that she left her backpack on a table next to the playground at Siesta Key Beach between 6 and 7 p.m. While she played with her daughter at the playground, someone stole all of her prescription medications from the backpack.  In total, there were three medications, all of which had been filled the day before. A signed medical theft affidavit was attached with the report. The case remains open.

Oct. 1: theft

Complainant reported that his shoes and cell phone were stolen from the beach at approximately 6 p.m. His Apple iPhone XR valued at approximately $350 was located by a finder app the following day at a Sarasota address. Investigation continues and the case remains open.

Oct. 2: battery

Complainant and her husband were waiting for an Uber to pick them up on Ocean Boulevard when two males walked up and began grabbing and hitting her. She asked them to stop multiple times before she poured her drink on one of the suspects. He responded by slapping her in the face and starting a physical altercation. When her husband stepped in, both suspects shoved him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly. When their Uber arrived, the suspects fled the scene. Both complainant and her husband suffered injuries, but declined treatment. Investigation continues, and the case remains open.

Oct. 4: burglary

The victim reported that an unknown subject entered his unlocked, screened lanai and stole four fishing poles with reels and a fishing net. The property is valued at approximately $525. The case remains open.

Oct. 5: burglary

A property manager for an absentee owner arrived to check the property and found a sliding glass door shattered. The guest house had been forcibly entered and paint poured on the floor and slung along the walls and windows. The patio was also damaged with paint. The estimated damages total approximately $3,000. Investigation has been completed.

Oct. 7: grand theft

Complainant reported that U.S. Cellular had a cellular phone delivered to the main office front door of a beach resort. Since delivery occurred after hours and the office was closed, the package was left outside the door. When Complainant arrived at the address, she discovered the package had been stolen. The property is valued at $1,000. The case remains open.
