As Sarasota County continues to celebrate its 100th year of existence, you should know that 86 historical markers established by the Sarasota Historical Commission dot the county from north to south, east to west.
Two of them exist on Siesta Key:
One is at 3435 Higel Ave., honoring Harry Higel. He was the city of Sarasota’s first mayor and played a key role in the development of Siesta Key.
The other is at the public beach, 948 Beach Rd. The county first purchased property there in 1954. The pavilion was constructed in 1959.
