Visitor numbers, national beach rankings and increased spring break travel fuel optimism for local businesses

The future of Siesta Key’s tourism industry appears bright. During the 12-month period between March 2025 and March 2026, Visit Sarasota reported that Sarasota County experienced nearly a 2% increase in visitors, with approximately 158,500 travelers visiting the area.
Direct spending declined slightly in March 2026, falling 0.01% compared with March 2025 statistics. Data for the Visit Sarasota report was compiled by the research firm Downs & St. Germain.
In a May 2026 article titled “Travel Boom in Siesta Key: Tourism Rebounds with Two Percent Growth in 2026 as Local Businesses Thrive,” the global business-to-business digital magazine and news platform Travel and Tour World reported on Siesta Key’s tourism outlook following the close of the 2025-26 season.
In the travel industry publication’s report, Mike Gatz, general manager of Gilligan’s Island Bar & Grill and former chairman of the Siesta Key Chamber, was quoted as saying, “Last year, after the hurricanes, it took a while for people to start coming back, but this year I think people were excited to get back to Siesta Key because we definitely noticed a lot more visitors this year.”
Siesta Key business owners also reported a general sense of optimism on the island. “Local business owners in Siesta Key are reporting a surge in foot traffic and record bookings,” Travel and Tour World reported.
Siesta Key’s growing number of national and international honors also has contributed to the resurgence. The 2026 U.S. News & World Report ranking that named Siesta Beach the No. 1 beach in the United States, the island’s No. 7 ranking in The World’s 50 Best Beaches list for 2026, as well as Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award and top-five ranking among the Best Beaches in the World in 2025, all have added to Siesta Key’s growing popularity.
Tourism officials also credited increased spring break visitation in March 2026 with supporting the positive numbers and optimism.
The Visit Sarasota report also highlighted regional travel trends among visitors from across the United States traveling to the Sarasota region. Urban residents from New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit were among visitors from “top origin markets.”
Midwest visitors accounted for 34.3% of tourists, while visitors from the Northeast represented 30.4%. The number of visitors from western states increased by 26.6%, and visitors from southeastern states — excluding Florida residents — increased by 19.5%.
