While a group of Siesta Key residents strives toward incorporation, it wouldn’t take place until Dec. 31, 2022 if successful. Until then, the Key will continue to be governed by Sarasota County officials.
That doesn’t mean some local residents can’t help represent Siesta Key in the near future, as three seats on the Sarasota County Planning Commission will be available starting Aug. 31.
Those with a background in planning and/or zoning are encouraged to apply. The deadline is Aug. 3.
According to the Sarasota County website, regarding the Planning Commission:
Purpose: The Planning Commission, as the local planning agency, is obligated to interpret and advise the County Commission on the adoption of and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan, as well as land-use applications filed, pursuant to state statute or existing county ordinances.
Requirements: Nine voting members.
- Must be Sarasota County resident for at least two years.
- One additional non-voting member appointed by the School Board.
- Required to file financial disclosure.
Term: Four years.
Meetings: Twice monthly, first and third Thursday at 5 p.m.; special meetings as needed.
