Double-crested Cormorant
Phalacrocorax auritus
This sociable shorebird flaunts stunning aquamarine eyes set in vibrant contrast with yellow-orange skin around its mouth. The cormorant’s inky coloring resembles that of a stealth bomber; a sleek profile makes it a rather effective fisherman by air. Not only does the cormorant dive below the water’s surface to hunt, but it is also an accomplished swimmer! Oversized webbed feet and a long neck make the cormorant a veritable torpedo underwater. Additionally, the cormorant’s hooked bill tip is the perfect tool for snagging fish and crunching crustaceans—seafood delights making up most of the bird’s diet. Siesta Key’s interior offers prime habitat options for the cormorant to hunt and nest in mangroves near canals, bayous, and inlets.
